Inquisitor: The quantum theory of id

04/11/11  ||  Smalley

Inquisitor has a lot in common with a certain GlobalD staffer; for one thing, they share the same first names (well, the band only has a first name, but, er…). Secondly, through the band’s use of such trendy intellectual buzzwords like “quantum” and “id”, they show themselves to be very smart, just like IG being a teacher shows him to be an extremely smart person (lawlz) .

But all not-so-friendly fellow staffer ribbing aside, the intro track here rambles on too long with some dialogue about history’s greatest minds tending to be “haunted”, but some of the ambient effects do start to creep you out. Sadly, things become less interesting once the actual music kicks in, as the singer engages in high-pitched, raspy yelping, as if the Squeaky-Voiced Teen from The Simpsons (srsly, that’s his character’s name) was singing here.

I also don’t understand why these guys call themselves “avant-garde black metal”, as I didn’t hear enough black-ness to justify the first label, and the garde-y stuff, which seems to be made up solely of gratuitous piano-playing, doesn’t add much. Fleshgod Apocalypse, these guys are not. Also, the songs here drag on for way too long (five words: four tracks, lasting 39 minutes). You do the math. Some of the riffs are kind of cool, the drummer’s talented, and the production is kind of unique, but the songwriting just isn’t compelling enough to make up for that. So, this one’s a pass, for the most part.

5.5/10: Hugs ‘n kisses, IG!
